Matthew Gattie is a recent graduate of York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada where he majored in both
creative writing and psychology. This painting was painted by him during a grade 13 high school
course. It was chosen out of his class to represent the best of the class, then out of his high school to
represent the high school, then of a few to represent the city, and went on to represent
Simcoe County as one of the best high school paintings of the year.
The Gallery of Matthew GAttie
Art
Matthew Gattie was born in Toronto, Ontario, but grew up and went to high school in
the small city of Orillia, Ontario, one hour north of Toronto. He went to York University in
Toronto, and graduated with degrees in both psychology and creative writing in 2006. He loves all
things outdoors; He worked for several summers during high school and University as an interior
canoe trip guide for a children's camp in Algonquin Park, Ontario, where he also took frequent
canoe trips with his friends. This painting was inspired by my first summer living in Toronto, as
a small town boy's first experience living among the claustrophobic towers of the big city. His
aspirations are to write a book. He has had several pieces of writing published throughout the
United States and Canada.
